Authors Nancy Leigh DeMoss and Dannah Gresh received input from 1,000 girls in ten cities across the U.S. for Lies Young Women Believe and the Truth That Sets Them Free. What they discovered is that young women are being deceived, set on a path of destruction by Satan's lies. These girls have bought in to today's norms, and they see nothing wrong. This book spells out in understandable terms the deception and the Truth available in the Bible.

Lies Young Women Believe begins with definitions of terms. Using examples of real situations, the authors define "lie" by pointing out some of the results of the deceiver's efforts: drug use, incest, suicidal feelings. They relate how Eve was beguiled by the serpent in the Garden of Eden, and how the reader is similar to Eve in falling for lies. Then the authors tell what the truth is -- "Jesus Christ and His Word." Readers receive a firm message that turning to this Truth will set them free of lies and the pain they are causing.

The twenty-five lies identified are grouped into lies about God, Satan, oneself, guys, relationships, faith, sin, media, and the future. Each lie is backed up with examples, statistics, and first person comments and stories. The authors persuade the reader that the lie is wrong using Scripture and common sense. A summary showing the lie vs. the truth and a page for notes end each chapter.

The final section of the the book offers advice on how to escape the lies. Using a question and answer format, the authors lead the reader to identify the lies and set a course for overcoming them by replacing them with Truth. They finish with a list of "Truths That Set Me Free," positive messages from the Bible to apply to everyday situations.

Recommendation: The lies that are revealed in Lies Young Women Believe are not new. In fact, they are pretty much the same lies that were around when I was a teen. So, why are they still here? The authors point out that Satan is persistent, particularly with young ladies, but, in my opinion, the fact that these lies have been around so long only makes them easier for teens to believe.

The subject matter included is touchy. Intimate topics are addressed frankly and tactfully, and parents may want to preview the book. However, these are matters that come up even with the most protected homeschooled teens. The authors are quick to note that, based upon their studies, homeschooled children frequently succumb to these lies. Everything in this book, no matter how personal, is related to Biblical principles from a Christian perspective.

Lies Young Women Believe offers an outstanding opportunity for female youth group study or mother/daughter discussions. Perhaps by acknowledging these deceptions before they can fully take root, mothers will have the chance to save their daughters from some painful lessons. This excellent book will also help mothers better understand themselves and will deepen their relationship with the Lord.
