A Girl's Guide to Home Skills

by Mrs. Martha Greene

Review by Tracy Robinson

A Girl's Guide to Home Skills developed from The Home Maker's Mentor by Mrs. Martha Greene, author of Treasury of Vintage Homekeeping Skills. Available for $39.95 from Marmee's Kitchen

A Girl's Guide to Home Skills is a thorough and informative book sure to be helpful for girls ages 8-10. The goal of the book is to teach young girls the principles of homemaking and prepare them to be a good "keeper of the home" when they grow up.

In eight sections, the book covers skills a young girl should know including beautifying the lawn, cleaning your bedroom, canning, and embroidery. With complete and easy-to-understand instructions, it describes many projects such as cleaning closets, organizing pantries, and even planning meals for special occasions! When the girl has finished a chapter and completed the exercises, MotherDear can sign off that she has learned and displayed the principles in that section. The book has large print and amusing illustrations that will make it appealing to little girls.

Recommendation: Overall, this is a book that will be helpful to young girls and will make them feel older because they are learning a mother's tasks. There are several spelling errors in the book, and a reference to an asparagus as a fruit, but these don't take away from the content. The illustrations help to keep the reader's attention, and the check-off pages will be handy for the homeschooling parent who would like to count this as a course.
