In Home School Heroes, the Struggle & Triumph of Home Schooling in America, Christopher Klicka weaves an interesting story of the homeschooling movement with discussions of the history of homeschooling in America, the struggles to revive homeschooling in the late twentieth century, and the Home School Legal Defense Association's role in supporting and defending parents' right to homeschool. The author begins each chapter with a Bible verse and gives credit at all times to God for guiding him in his decisions. Starting with his initial employment with the HSLDA, Mr. Klicka describes many of the benchmark cases fought through various state court systems to make homeschooling legal.
In the chapter, "Government Homeschooling: A Trojan Horse,", Mr. Klicka sounds the warning for homeschoolers to avoid the temptation of the free curricula and computers offered via government-supported, "homeschool," charter schools. He points out that with the "free," curricula comes accountability to the government. Having freedom from government oversight and interference is what the twenty-plus year battle through the court systems has been about, so participating in "homeschool," charter schools actually puts independent homeschooling at risk again.
Mr. Klicka also mentions homeschooling in other countries of the world. He asserts that homeschooling families here can have a tremendous impact in supporting others to legalize homeschooling worldwide
Recommendation: Home School Heroes will give all homeschoolers an appreciation of the sacrifices that were made to legalize homeschooling in the USA. The author issues a stern warning that the rights gained through the 1980's and 1990's may well be lost by those who sell their freedoms for some free curricula via charter schools. Mr. Klicka has strong opinions on many subjects with which some homeschoolers may not agree, but we can all unite on the idea of maintaining our freedoms and helping others around the world obtain them.
