The Easter Garden Book

Stories by The Reverend C.E. Visminas

Review by Martha Robinson

The Easter Garden Book,Stories by The Reverend C.E. Visminas. Drawings by Patrick J. Kacin. Paperback, 24 pages, $4.95. Published by Morehouse Publishing. Out of print. Please check for availability at Alibris or AbeBooks.

The Easter Garden Book combines the Easter story with a cut-out tableau to provide fun learning for three to nine year olds. Christ's tomb is the backdrop for the interactive story, and Roman guards, Mary Magdalene, other women, Peter, an angel, and Christ are the characters. The story begins with the tomb and the preparation of Christ's body and continues through Christ's rising with a brief mention of Christ's time with the disciples and ascension.

The pictures are black and white line drawings, ready to be colored. The narrative appears on the left side of each page so that when the cut-out portion is removed, the story will still remain intact. Rev. Visminas wrote in a manner that gently and thoroughly explains the events of Easter. Many suggestions for enhancing the basic materials to add realism with rocks, lights, and plants are included.

Recommendation:The Easter Garden Book offers hands-on learning for young children. With a little imagination on the part of the homeschooling mom, the book can be turned into a realistic cave that will bring the resurrection story to life.
