The Story of the Ancient World is a revised and expanded version of The Story of the Chosen People by H.A. Guerber, a children's history book written in the late 1800's. The Story of the Chosen People gave children a good introduction to history, while reinforcing excellent character values, presenting challenging vocabulary, and sharpening children's interest in reading.

This storybook is intended to be a child's first introduction to history from the beginning of the world to the end of the Persian Empire. Double-spaced, with medium-sized text, the book is easy for children to read or to follow along as it is read to them. Short chapters conform to children's attention spans, and classical paintings and artwork are sprinkled throughout the book to accent the stories.

This book follows the history of the Jews, or Chosen People, as it is laid out in the Holy Bible. However, the book does not focus on or attempt to teach the Jewish faith; rather, it lays out in a purely historical manner the events occuring in and surrounding the Bible. Mrs. Miller states that her goal is to familiarize children of any faith with the history of the Jews. Also included in The Story of the Ancient World are an outline, recording all important dates covered in the book, and a "recommended reading" list, which suggests books that correspond with the material covered in each chapter of the book.

Recommendation: This book will be an excellent addition to your child's reading list! The suggested reading level is third to fourth grade, but younger children would enjoy being read to, and older children could use the book as a supplement for other curricula. Either way, The Story of the Ancient World will expand a child's knowledge, improve his reading skills, and spark his interest to learn more about the world in which he lives.
