Fun Ideas for Studying Ancient Rome and Greece

The following ideas were contributed by SoCalPam.

Create coinage -- cut an aluminum can into pieces, shape coins and hammer the edges under so that they are smooth. Using a sharp tool, etch your "Ceasar's" face and appropriate lettering.

Bath salts using aromatic oils and epsom salts. Works great for a study on Roman aqueducts and plumbing.

Cooking of any kind. Encourage the children to lay down around the (low) table like the Roman emperors did. If you're brave, let one kid be the slave with a feather to tickle the backs of the other children's throats, encouraging them to vomit. Then they can begin eating again. Kidding! I mean, it's true that they did that, but that's icky even for me.

Styrofoam ships with paper masts to sail the Mediterranean. What were the shipping routes? How did Paul get around? Tie it into Ephesians.

Greece -- write and act out a play. The boys should take girls' parts as girls didn't participate in theatre back then.

Both Rome and Greece -- create a pottery vase and paint it.

Greece -- Olympics! Create your feats and award laurel wreaths. Make the feats harder (Spartan) for older kids.

Here's a link for Roman crafts.
