Horatius at the Bridge By Cheryl Lowe. Paperback, comb-bound, $14.95. Available from HSC links and
Cheryl Lowe, author of Latina Christiana, shares one of her favorite poems in this study guide for Thomas Babington Macaulay's Horatius at the Bridge. Mrs. Lowe begins with a discussion of Mr. Macaulay's education and the times he lived in. She then relates this information to why he wrote the poem and how he presented what he called a "trifle,", his collection of five ballads of Roman history. Mrs. Lowe offers additional historical background and suggestions for teaching and memorization. The poem, broken into stanzas, is shown in large print with vocabulary pronunciation and definitions in the margins. Five sections of comprehension questions, primarily short answer and matching, are included along with a final exam. Maps and a description of Rome during Horatius's time also appear. A complete answer key is in the back of the book. The Horatius at the Bridge Study Guide would be best for students from fifth to eighth grade. The book is not reproducible. Recommendation: Horatius at the Bridge is a wonderful poem that gives families the opportunity to discuss courage, self-sacrifice, and honor. Cheryl Lowe's study guide brings depth to the poem by pulling together information on Roman history, British history of the author's time, and poetic elements.
