HOMESCHOOLING?!! WHAT WAS I THINKING?!!,

By John Edelson, Time4Learning Founder, Interactive Homeschool Curricula

Do you watch other mothers running errands, going to the gym, doing their shopping, taking care of their home, and catching up on their chores without the stress and responsibility of trying to also homeschool their children? Do you sometimes wonder why you ever took this on? Are you looking for some new ideas that might make it easier?

If any of this sounds familiar, know that you arent alone. If you suddenly find yourself asking, What was I thinking? the answer may be that you were thinking just like thousands of other families who have decided to homeschool. In fact, most people who homeschool their children have one or more of three main reasons for beginning the journey:

Religious Reasons They usually feel that the value system of their family is not adequately represented in the local school system. More often than not, these homeschooling families start out with a mostly religious or values-based curriculum. Usually this includes parents who want to manage their children's exposure to secular thinking during their early formative years or parents who feel that a Bible-based approach is the fundamental principle of their life.

Philosophical Reasons Some parents find that the educational institutions of today inhibit true learning and education. Inspired by the writings of Holt and Gatto, they have a range of views on education that run counter to the strict curriculum-based institutional approach. They may have become disillusioned by the focus on standardized testing, or the competitive nature of achievement vs. the enjoyment of learning for its own sake. Often these homeschoolers begin with non-standard approaches to education such as unit studies, literature based learning, or unschooling.

Needs-Based Reasons - These parents had their children in school but they were disappointed by the experience. Their childs needs were overlooked or simply werent being met. Some people call these homeschoolers, the Accidental Homeschoolers . These families are more problem solvers than dedicated homeschoolers. They approach homeschooling without any particular approach in mind other than doing the best they can for their children. In many cases, they start homeschooling somewhat abruptly since their decision to pull their child from school sometimes springs from a crisis or series of incidents.

Whatever your reason for beginning the homeschooling journey, Time4Learning is a new interactive curriculum which thousands of homeschoolers use to improve their kids education and to help them simplify their day.

Time4Learning is an online interactive curriculum that covers preschool, elementary school, and middle school . With lesson plans, online tracking and computer-graded quizzes and tests, Time4Learning is easy for parents to use and to track their childs progress. There is no preparation necessary by the parent. Time4Learning can be used as a core or supplementary curriculum.

Most families use Time4Learning in different ways in different subjects. For instance, they might use the Time4Learning math program as the core curriculum but supplement it with worksheets. They might use the language arts program in combination with a great books, journaling, and handwriting programs in language arts. For science and social studies, they might pick the lessons that match the core curriculum (perhaps unit studies) that they are pursuing in these areas.

Its interesting that the homeschoolers with their different motivations find Time4Learning to be a good fit for them.

Many religious homeschoolers adopt Time4Learning (which is secular) as a supplement to religious-based curriculum as a way to provide diversity within the day. They often find that after a few years of homeschooling, they have a higher comfort level with their childrens religious development and maturity but that providing strong education remains a challenge.

The unschoolers appreciate the student-paced approach and that the children feel like they are exploring the curriculum. The freedom of pick their own schedule and to move between educational levels and subjects is particularly appreciated by this group.

The accidental homeschoolers appreciate the ease-of-use of Time4Learning and that such a low cost program can be used for all the different subjects and for their children from preschool to middle school. Often, for parents who are starting to homeschool for the first time, Time4Learning provides a convenient method to see start and to get first hand experience observing their childrens educational level and interest in the different subjects without having to start acquiring books and planning exercises.

If you are asking yourself, Homeschooling? What was I thinking?! the answer is that you were thinking of what was best for your child, and we hope that Time4Learning will be one way you ensure your childs success in this ongoing homeschool adventure.
